This video cassette, which forms part of the series devoted to teaching the basic turning operations and follows on from the slides plus audio cassette units dealing with knowledge of the lathe and its work capability, illustrates the facing or ending operation, a lathe operation used to obtain flat surfaces perpendicular to the axis of the workpiece being machined. After focusing on the purpose of the facing and ending of cyclindrical workpieces, the audiovisual unit presents the tools used in this operation and the characteristic working movements of each. To make it easier to learn the machining operations, and to highlight the skills required of the operator, the viewer follows the machining cycle consisting in the ending of a shaft cut from a bar by means of a sawing machine. Flashbacks are then used to recapitulate briefly the various stages of the machining operations filmed.
