The video cassette presents a teaching unit on straight turning, an operation aimed at obtaining cylindrical surfaces with preset dimensions and degree of surface finish.
After briefly mentioning the widespread use of cylindrical bodies in mechanical constructions and after illustrating the basic workpiece and tool movements used to obtain cilindricity (roundness, straightness and parallelism), the audiovisual unit presents the main types of tool used in this machining operation.
Students are also shown the main workpiece set-ups on the machine (self-centering chuck, clamping between centres, use of rests, etc.) as well as machining operations on as many as three workpieces with different characteristics.
A brilliant piece of animation enables trainees to follow step by step the gradual transformation of the unmachined workpiece to a finished workpiece corresponding to the size specifications in the drawing.
During the machining operation, trainees have an opportunity to observe the movements of the slides, the correct use of the controls and adjustment devices, and the use of the measuring instruments.
The audiovisual unit concludes with a summary of the machining operations on film.
