The video cassette presents the execution of milling operations designed to obtain
splines with straight, parallel surfaces.
After briefly illustrating a number of characteristic executions enabling the
instructor to define this type of operation and clarify the desired requisites
of straight splines on mechanical components in relation to their functions, the
unit presents the tools used in progressive order in this machining operation,
i.e. slab (peripheral) milling cutters and cylindrical shank cutters,
the tool-workpiece movements, and the workpiece clamping and positioning systems:
vices, clamps, special fixtures.
Graphic computer animations are employed to describe briefly the subsequent operations
which enable the operator to obtain straight splines or prismatic workpieces.
The video unit then shows an actual machining operation, consisting in the execution,
on a workpiece specially chosen for teaching purposes, of a spile by means of
a disk-type side milling cutter, and of two side slots using a shank cutter.
During the machining, a number of standard practices and set-ups are recalled
by means of animations.
The video cassette concludes with a final summary, which reviews the most important
steps in the machining operations analyzed.
