This video cassette presents the TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas)
welding technique using a non-consumable electrode in a protective inert gas atmosphere,
in its most characteristic applications.
AIM. To provide users with guidelines as when it is
appropriate to choose the TIG welding system on the basis of
the caracteristics of the materials to be welded and the type of weld to be produced,
as well as to enable them to choose the optimal power supply system, prepare the
electrode, choose the filler material and perform the welding operation.
TOPICS. The video cassette begins by presenting the
operating principle of the TIG welding system, in which a tungsten
electrode is used to produce the voltaic arc which supplies the melting heat and
an inert gas (normally argon) is used to create the protective atmosphere around
the weld pool.
The unit then presents the behaviour of the electrode and the piece to be welded
when direct current with straght or inverse polarity, or alternating current is
used and describes the advantages of the use of square-wave current and pulsed
arc.
After this introductory section, which, however, is fundamental for setting-up
the welding machine, the video cassette presents a whole series of TIG
welding operations on stainless steel, aluminium, cast iron, cooper and brass
in widely differing work positions: butt welds, fillet welds, external fillet
welds... with direct current and normal arc, or with alternating current and pulsed
arc or square wave. In addition, the video unit illustrates the use of the special
GAS LENS rod and use of the TIG technique for
spot welding.
The video cassette concludes with an analysis of the main defects ecountered during
TIG welding and their causes.
