The video cassette illustrates the MIG-MAG welding technique
using continuous solid and cored welding wire, and the MIG-MAG
welding techniques used on various materials and in different work positions.
AIM. To enable users to choose the most suitable welding technique
for the type of weld they have to produce, to set up the welding machine and perform
welding operations with exact current values and without producing defective welds.
TOPICS. The video cassette begins by presenting the MIG-MAG
welding technique using continuous solid and cored welding wires, which perform
the simple functions of electrode and filler metal, and using inert (MIG=Metal
Inert Gas) or active (MAG=Metal Active Gas) gases for creating the
protective atmosphere around the weld pool.
The video unit then presents the main techniques used for transfering the filler
metal to the weld pool, i.e. the short arc, the spray arc and the pulsed arc,
with animations illustrating for each of these the formation and transfer of the
molten drops, the criteria governing the choice of technique and the fields of
application.
After this initial section, of a general nature, the video cassette presents the
machine set-up activities and then begins a series of demonstrations of MIG-MAG
welding operations on ordinary steels using solid and cored welding wire by means
of the short and spray arc techniques, as well as on stainless steels using the
pulsed arc technique, and on aluminium, again using the pulsed arc technique.
The video cassette concludes with an analysis of some of the most frequent MIG-MAG
welding defects together with identification of their causes (e.g. excessive arc
voltage, excessive wire feed rate...
