The video cassette presents three metal cutting procedures using the thermal energy
produced by the combustion and bombardment of ionized gases and by the energy
of laser beams.
AIMS. After studying this unit, trainees will be in
a position to explain the general principles of these three metal cutting techniques,
to describe the cutting sets and to start acquiring practical experience with
both the manual procedure and with semi-automatic machines.
TOPICS. The unit begins with a presentation of the oxyhydrogen
flame cutting technique, explaining the preliminary operations needed to set up
the cutting operation and the principle on which the technique is based, that
is to say the combustion of ferrous oxide.
This is followed by a number of significant demonstrations of the cutting of pieces
of various shapes and sizes from steel plate by means of the manual procedure,
with the aid, where necessary, of accessory equipment, or by means of the use
of semi-automatic or automatic machines. After completing the section on cutting
with the oxyhydrogen flame, the unit goes on to illustrate the operating principle
and equipment used in plasma arc cutting, followed by examples of practical experience
using eithr the manual or automatic procedures.
The unit concludes by illustrating the operating priciples involved in cutting
by means of powerfully concentrated light rays in the form of laser beams, together
with a demonstration of an application using automatic laser cutting.
